Sant’Anna School mourns loss of Professor Filiberto Loreti who served as director of department of agriculture from 1976 to 1988

Professor Filiberto Loreti served as director of the Sant’Anna School department of agriculture from 1976 to 1988. He was an esteemed scientist of the University of Pisa. In 1987, Professor Filiberto Loreti was awarded the Ordine del Cherubino.

Professor Filiberto Loreti has died on April 30 after a long illness. He served the University of Pisa and the Sant’Anna School with extraordinary distinction as Professor of Arboreal Cultivation, Head of the Division of Ligneous Plant Production and Protection and Director of Research. Professor Loreti also served as President of the Georgofili Academy- west central section, established in 2005.

Friends and colleagues were invited to attend his funeral at Santo Stefano Church, Santo Stefano Street, on Tuesday 2nd May. Professor Pierdomenico Perata, rector of Sant’Anna School and Professor Francesco Donato Busnelli, former rector of Sant’Anna School and Professor Emeritus of civil law attended the memorial service in Pisa.

Professor Filiberto Loreti, was born in Tarquinia on 26 May 1935. He graduated from Pisa University in 1959. He started his career at the University of Pisa in 1960 as a researcher in arboreal cultivation of fruit trees and was an acknowledged expert in plant physiology. At the University of California - Davis, he was on a fellowship in 1963 – 1964 and he worked with Professors H.T. Hartmann and R.M. Sachs on metabolic activities in the stem tissues to form root primordia. He was an associate professor and became a full professor in 1971. He joined the Italian National Research Council in 1968, he was also a member of CUN council from 1980-1987, and he served as director of “G. Scaramuzzi” department from 1989-1998.

Professor Loreti wrote extensively on ligneous plants production and protection. He co-authored the book "Monografia delle principali cultivar di nettarine" and he published more than 350 papers: "Frutticoltura anni '80" (Reda), "La Toscana nella storia dell'olivo e dell'olio" (ARSIA), “Manuale di Peschicoltura” (Il Sole 24Ore-Edagricole”), "Le Nuove Frontiere dell'Arboricoltura"( Perdisa), “Il Pesco” (ART-Servizi Editoria), "The Peach" (CAB International).

He attended many international conferences and gave invited talks at universities in Europe and all over the world. He promoted the development of plant physiology at the international level through congresses, symposia and workshops. From 1982 - 1998 he served as the scientific coordinator of the PhD Program in Horticulture and Agronomy.

The whole Sant’Anna School community is mourning his passing, and everyone sends their thoughts and prayers to his family.
